The warm Indian Ocean forms the eastern border of the Elephant Coast and this protected area with its long beaches and sand dunes covered by coastal forest is truly remarkable. The clear blue waters include one of the richest reefs ecosystems in the world with over 1250 fish species including colourful reef fishes, sharks, rays, pelagic game fishes, 95 identified species of beautiful corals and a wide variety of plant life. This stretch of coastline also boasts one of the world's few remaining breeding grounds for the rare leatherback and loggerhead turtles and even the prehistoric coelacanth has been spotted here.

Visitors can pe the numerous reefs, snorkel amongst some of the rocky outcrops close to shore and enjoy surf, swimming or body boarding. For anglers there is excellent deep sea fishing or even fishing off the beach and there are guided and self guided walks among the dunes and coastal forest, whale watching and seasonal night drives to see giant turtles nesting. Many beaches have tidal rock and sand pools which provide endless fun for children to snorkel and splash about in.
